Solitude is not a sentence

Learning to enjoy your own company is a skill, and it can be learned late.

We are taught to treat being alone as a gap, something to be filled as quickly as possible. I wrote Courage to Be Alone because I learned the opposite, slowly and not by choice.

Solitude, when you stop fighting it, gives you something company rarely can: the chance to hear your own preferences without anyone else's voice mixed in. What you actually like to eat. How you want your mornings. What you would do if no one was watching.

It takes practice. Start with one meal a week alone, without a screen. Then a walk. Then a whole Sunday with nothing planned. Notice what you reach for when nobody is asking anything of you.

The goal isn't to stay alone. It's to become someone who can choose company out of fullness rather than fear.
